Durotan Powers Sustainable Future at University of Sussex’s West Slope Residences

22nd April 2025

Durotan, the UK’s longest-established supplier and installer of pre-insulated pipe systems, is proud to announce its ongoing role in delivering a cutting-edge, carbon-efficient district heating network at the University of Sussex’s new West Slope Residences.

Working in collaboration with Balfour Beatty plc, the project marks a significant step forward in Phase 3 of the university’s accommodation redevelopment. Once complete, the West Slope Residences will provide 1,900 new student bedrooms and a range of modern facilities—all underpinned by sustainable energy infrastructure.

A key feature of the scheme is the installation of over 2 kilometres of underground pre-insulated pipework, which will form the backbone of the district heating system. Designed for maximum energy efficiency and long-term reliability, the system reinforces both the University of Sussex’s and Durotan’s commitment to sustainable development and net-zero goals.

Established in 1978, Durotan has successfully completed more than 4,000 projects across the UK, including many of the country’s most recognised district heating schemes. As pioneers in the field, the company continues to lead innovation in low-carbon heating solutions across educational institutions, housing developments, and commercial projects.

Durotan’s involvement spans the full project lifecycle—from early-stage feasibility advice and technical consultation, to detailed design, supply, and full system installation. The company also offers the flexibility to undertake associated groundworks or work seamlessly with the client’s chosen civil contractor.

"We’re thrilled to be playing a key role in delivering sustainable infrastructure at the University of Sussex," said a spokesperson for Durotan. "Our mission has always been to drive energy efficiency through reliable, long-lasting district heating solutions that serve communities across the UK."

The West Slope Residences development is set to be a benchmark for sustainable student living and a model for how modern heating networks can support the UK’s transition to a low-carbon future.
